How Powerful is Dooku? | Dooku Respect Thread (2020)

MINI RESPECT THREAD: DOOKU
This is my first entry in a series of bite-sized respect threads. The goal is to create blogs that are easy and quick to read, emphasize only the most important facts, and are packed with sourcing for debate purposes. (PRE 32 BBY) Dooku was regarded as perhaps the greatest lightsaber duelist of the Jedi Order, was one of only two Jedi to ever defeat Mace Windu in a legitimate spar, was himself allegedly never bested by Windu, and was regarded by Yoda as both his "most learned in the ways of the Force" and "strongest" student.
(32 BBY - 22 BBY) Dooku grew far more powerful in the Force and skilled with a lightsaber after falling to the dark side and apprenticing under Palpatine.
(23 BBY) Dooku easily threw 215 meter Sith cruisers at Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi on Korriban, forming mountains of twisted metal. Note that while Korriban was a dark side nexus, Darth Bane observed its energies had been subsiding for millenia, and Obi-Wan stated that Dooku was more powerful on Geonosis anyway.
(22 BBY) Dooku was far more formidable than Darth Maul and easily defeated Obi-Wan Kenobi on Geonosis--who, in turn, had continued to master the Force and train Anakin Skywalker for ten years since Episode I, in which Obi-Wan had already fiercely contented with Maul during an angry flurry after Qui-Gon Jinn was defeated.
(22 BBY) Dooku was "equal to" Yoda in the Force on Geonosis according to George Lucas. Lucas likewise states that their lightsaber duel was an epic clash between supreme masters of the Force, with both combatants attacking and defending. Note that these descriptions reveal a late change in the Episode II script, which instead chronicles a one-sided fight of Dooku futilely attacking an unmoving Yoda and then Yoda explosively attacking and disarming a rapidly retreating Dooku. Many 2002 sources used the earlier Episode II script and consequently depicted Dooku's performance unfavorably, but later sources generally support closeness or parity.
(21 BBY) Dooku held his own against Mace Windu and Obi-Wan Kenobi combined on Behpour. The Jedi duo needed to redirect his Force lightning at nearby energy generators, causing them to overload and release damaging electrical blasts, gradually weakening Dooku and eventually collapsing the large platform that they fought on.
(21 BBY) Dooku utterly dominated Asajj Ventress with telekinesis on Vjun. (Ventress had already challenged Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi on five occasions respectively, defeated Kit Fisto on Ord Cestus, moved far faster than Plo Koon on the Devastation, and defeated Luminara Unduli on the Tranquility.) Months later above Toydaria, Ventress briefly held her own against Dooku but was ultimately telekinetically battered into submission. (This more powerful Ventress had even greatly challenged Mace Windu on Coruscant.) Note, however, that Ventress was uniquely vulnerable to Dooku due to withheld knowledge and their personal connection.
(21 BBY & 20 BBY) Dooku held his own against Yoda on Vjun. Although outclassed, Dooku was only slowly driven back and forced Yoda to breathe hard. Note that while Vjun was a powerful dark side nexus, Yoda was nevertheless repeatedly suggested to likewise be amplified by its energies, which the author Sean Stewart later confirmed. A year later on Tatooine, Dooku shockingly defeated Yoda. Note that Dooku may have shrouded his powers to deceive and lure Yoda into a trap, as Yoda stated that Dooku's abilities had significantly diminished immediately before Dooku abruptly bested him via Force lightning and corrected that he had grown more powerful.
(19 BBY) Dooku handily defeated Obi-Wan Kenobi on the Invisible Hand, who had become one of the most powerful and skilled Jedi in history. Dooku easily repelled Obi-Wan's use of his secondary form of Ataru, but Obi-Wan's abrupt change to his primary form of Soresu initially bewildered Dooku with its speed and technique. Once Dooku adjusted, he quickly incapacitated Obi-Wan twice-over within the span of seconds, perhaps showing his mastery in engineering and exploiting openings, all the while fighting Anakin Skywalker too. Note that while Obi-Wan's second incapacitation was attributed to Dooku's familiarity with his style, his abrupt change in tactics, and the attack's speed preventing Obi-Wan from forming a Force barrier, Obi-Wan likewise has experienced Dooku's form of Makashi across twelve fights against Asajj Ventress and four prior fights against Dooku, and Anakin was still unnerved by the ease by which Dooku defeated Obi-Wan despite knowing its circumstances.
(19 BBY) Dooku held his own against Anakin Skywalker on the Invisible Hand. (Even at the fight's onset, Anakin was repeatedly described as perhaps the most powerful and skilled Jedi alive and of the Order's entire history.) Anakin gradually grew more powerful across the fight as he drew more on his dark side emotions, with his devastating Djem So blows exhausting Dooku's Makashi defenses. After Dooku eliminated Obi-Wan and Anakin cast aside his Jedi restraint and embraced his fear and rage fully, Anakin became even more powerful and fought in a state of mental clarity. Though Dooku was decisively defeated and the outcome was stated to be certain, the combat was still described as "intense" and as two combatants swirling and attacking in bursts of power. George Lucas stated that Anakin's defeat of Dooku proved him to be a "perfect apprentice" to Palpatine, and Christopher Lee stated the point of the fight was to surprise the audience and show a combatant could actually defeat Dooku.

- At the risk of getting a slew of Maul-loving mail, the short answer is that Count Dooku is more skillful than Maul. Think of Maul as a bulldog of a Jedi-killer. He attacks at full speed, full tilt, holding nothing back. That approach has its merits, but it doesn't always apply. Dooku was much more restrained and sophisticated, and he had a much better grasp of Jedi techniques and tactics. Maul was an impressive flurry of fury, barely giving his opponent time to think. Dooku, on the other hand, countered Kenobi's moves almost effortlessly because he knew precisely where to block. Free at last of the laser wall, Obi-Wan Kenobi charged out of the service tunnel and into the chamber that housed the melting pit. Abandoning any pretense of observing even the slightest caution, he barreled into Darth Maul with such fury that he almost knocked both of them off the ledge and into the abyss. He struck at the Sith Lord with his lightsaber as if his own safety meant nothing, lost in a red haze of rage and frustration, consumed by his grief for Qui-Gon and his failure to prevent his friend's fall.
The Sith Lord was borne backward by the Jedi Knight's initial rush, caught off guard by the other's wild assault, and pressed all the way back to the far wall of the melting pit. There he struggled to keep the young Jedi at bay, trying to open enough space between them to defend himself. Lightsabers scraped and grated against each other, and the chamber echoed with their fury. Lunging and twisting, Darth Maul regained the offensive and counterattacked, using both ends of his lightsaber in an effort to cut Obi-Wan's legs out from under him. But Obi-Wan, while not so experienced as Qui-Gon, was quicker. Anticipating each blow, he was able to elude his antagonist's efforts to bring him down.
The struggle took them around the edge of the melting pit and into the nooks and alcoves beyond, into shadowed recesses and around smoky pillars and pipe housings. Twice, Obi-Wan went down, losing his footing on the smooth flooring of the melting pit's rim. Once, Darth Maul hammered at him with such determination that he scorched the young Jedi's tunic, shoulder to waist, and it was only by countering with an upthrust counterstrike to the other's midsection and by rolling quickly away and back to his feet that Obi-Wan was able to escape.
They fought their way back toward the laser-riddled service passage, past Qui-Gon's still form, and into a tangle of vent tubes and circuit housings. Steam burst from ruptured pipes, and the air was filled with the acrid smell of scorched wiring. Darth Maul began to use his command of the Force to fling heavy objects at Obi-Wan, trying to throw him off balance, to disable him, to disrupt the flow of his attack. Obi-Wan responded in kind, and the air was filled with deadly missiles. Lightsabers flicked right and left to ward off the objects, and the clash of errant metal careening off stone walls formed an eerie shriek in the gloom.
The battle wore on, and for a time it was fought evenly. But Darth Maul was the stronger of the two and was driven by a frenzy that surpassed even the frantic determination that fueled Obi-Wan. Eventually, the Sith Lord began to wear the young Jedi down. Bit by bit, he pressed him back, carrying the attack to him, looking to catch him off guard. Obi-Wan could sense his body weakening, and his fear of what it would mean if he, too, were to fall, began to grow.
Never! he swore furiously.
Qui-Gon's words came back to him. Don't center on your fears. Concentrate on the here and now. He struggled to do so, to contain the emotions warring within and bearing him down. Be mindful of the living Force, my young Padawan. Be strong.
Sensing his opportunity slipping away from him and his strength waning, Obi-Wan mounted a final assault. He rushed the Sith Lord with a series of side blows designed to bring the two-bladed lightsaber horizontal. Then he feinted an attack to his enemy's left and brought his own lightsaber over and down with such force that he severed the other's weapon.
Crying out in fury, he cut triumphantly at the Sith Lord's horned head, a killing blow. And missed completely.
Darth Maul, anticipating the maneuver, had stepped smoothly away. Discarding the lesser half of his severed weapon, he counterattacked swiftly, striking at Obi-Wan with enough force that he knocked the young Jedi sideways and off balance. Quickly he struck him again, harder still, and this time Obi-Wan lost his footing completely and tumbled over the edge of the pit, his lightsaber flying from his hand. For an instant, he was falling, tumbling away into the dark. He reached out in desperation and caught hold of a metal rung just below the lip of the pit.
There he hung, helpless, staring up at a triumphant Darth Maul.

But with only a slight movement, the red blade stabbed under the blue, then lifted up, and Obi-Wan's blade went flying harmlessly high of the mark. With a slight reversal of his wrist, Dooku stabbed straight ahead, and Obi-Wan had to throw himself backward. He brought his lightsaber across as he did, trying to parry, but Dooku had already retracted his blade by then and had settled back into perfect defensive posture.
Against that posture, Obi-Wan's sudden flurry of attacks seemed exaggerated and inefficient, for Dooku defeated each, one after another, with a slight parry or dodge, seeming barely to move. For while Obi-Wan and most of the Jedi were sword fighters, Count Dooku was a fencer, following an older fighting style, one more effective against weapons like lightsabers than against projectile weapons like blasters. The Jedi on the whole had abandoned that old fighting style, considering it almost irrelevant against the enemies of the present galaxy, but Dooku had always held stubbornly to it, considering it among the highest of fighting disciplines.
Now, as the battle played out between the Count and Obi-Wan, the older way showed its brilliance. Obi-Wan leapt and spun, slashing side to side, chopping and thrusting, but all of Dooku's movements seemed far more efficient. He followed a single line, front and back, his feet shifting to keep him constantly in perfect balance as he retreated and came on suddenly with devastating thrusts that had Obi-Wan stumbling backward. "Master Kenobi, you disappoint me," the Count taunted. "Yoda holds you in such high esteem."
His words spurred Obi-Wan forward with another series of slashes and chops, but Dooku's red blade angled left and then right, then up just enough to send Obi-Wan's descending blade slipping off to the side. Obi-Wan had to retreat soon after, gasping for breath.
"Come, come, Master Kenobi," Dooku said, his lips curled in a wicked smile. "Put me out of my misery."
Obi-Wan steadied himself and shifted his lightsaber from hand to hand, getting a better grip on it. Then he exploded into motion, coming on again fiercely, his blue lightsaber flashing all about. He kept a better measure of his cuts this time, though, reversing his angle often, turning a wide slash into a sudden thrust, and he soon had Dooku backing, the red blade working furiously to keep Obi-Wan at bay.
Obi-Wan pressed forward more forcefully, but Dooku continued to fend off the strikes, and then his momentum played out. He was too far forward, while Dooku remained in perfect balance, ready for a counterstrike.
And then it was Dooku suddenly pressing the attack, his red blade stabbing and retracting so quickly that most of Obi-Wan's cutting parries hit nothing but air. Obi-Wan had to jump back, and then back again, and again, as those thrusts moved ever closer to hitting home.
Dooku stepped forward suddenly, stabbing low for Obi-Wan's thigh. Down went the blue blade to intercept, but to Obi-Wan's horror, Dooku retracted his weapon and thrust it right back out, up high and across the other way. Obi-Wan couldn't get his weapon back to block, nor could he slide back fast enough.
Dooku's red blade stabbed hard into his left shoulder, and as he lurched back, Dooku retracted the blade and stabbed along its original course, digging into Obi-Wan's right thigh. The Jedi stumbled backward, tripping and crashing hard against the wall, but even as he fell, Dooku was there, his red blade rolling over and inside Obi-Wan's blade, and with a sudden jerk, he sent Obi-Wan's lightsaber bouncing across the floor.

The Jedi duo needed to redirect his Force lightning at nearby energy generators, causing them to overload and release damaging electrical blasts, gradually weakening Dooku and eventually collapsing the large platform that they fought on.

As the battle against Dooku begins, the Sith Lord leaps away and takes refuge atop one of the large generators around the side of the platform. Leave Dooku for now and use a series of jump attacks to take out his magna guards. If you can't attack all of them at once, jack one of them and turn it on the others. Allow Master Kenobi to distract the guards while you attack them.
Once you've taken out all of Dooku's magna lackeys, he comes down from his perch and strikes. Attack him with lightsaber combos until he uses his Sith lightning. When he does, allow yourself to get zapped; Yoda then instructs you to redirect the lightning at one of the generators on the outside of the platform by swinging your lightsaber toward them.
As Dooku continues to fight, the generator charges the electricity and eventually overloads, sending a massive electrical blast out from the platform's center! When it does, the blast hits Count Dooku, dealing massive damage. Repeat this three times until Dooku's Health bar turns red.
Continue to redirect Dooku's lightning to the generators, and zap him with his own electrical charge. This time, however, you'll need to lure Dooku to the platform's center while the generators charge. After hitting him three more times, Dooku and the platform take enough damage to send them plummeting into the acid river below.

(Ventress had already challenged Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi on five occasions respectively, defeated Kit Fisto on Ord Cestus, moved far faster than Plo Koon on the Devastation, and defeated Luminara Unduli on the Tranquility.) Months later above Toydaria, Ventress briefly held her own against Dooku but was ultimately telekinetically battered into submission. (This more powerful Ventress had even greatly challenged Mace Windu on Coruscant.) Note, however, that Ventress was uniquely vulnerable to Dooku due to withheld knowledge and their personal connection.

Note that while Vjun was a powerful dark side nexus, Yoda was nevertheless repeatedly suggested to likewise be amplified by its energies, which the author Sean Stewart later confirmed. A year later on Tatooine, Dooku shockingly defeated Yoda. Note that Dooku may have shrouded his powers to deceive and lure Yoda into a trap, as Yoda stated that Dooku's abilities had significantly diminished immediately before Dooku abruptly bested him via Force lightning and corrected that he had grown more powerful.

Once Dooku adjusted, he quickly incapacitated Obi-Wan twice-over within the span of seconds, perhaps showing his mastery in engineering and exploiting openings, all the while fighting Anakin Skywalker too. Note that while Obi-Wan's second incapacitation was attributed to Dooku's familiarity with his style, his abrupt change in tactics, and the attack's speed preventing Obi-Wan from forming a Force barrier, Obi-Wan likewise has experienced Dooku's form of Makashi across twelve fights against Asajj Ventress and four prior fights against Dooku, and Anakin was still unnerved by the ease by which Dooku defeated Obi-Wan despite knowing its circumstances.

Anakin gradually grew more powerful across the fight as he drew more on his dark side emotions, with his devastating Djem So blows exhausting Dooku's Makashi defenses. After Dooku eliminated Obi-Wan and Anakin cast aside his Jedi restraint and embraced his fear and rage fully, Anakin became even more powerful and fought in a state of mental clarity. Though Dooku was decisively defeated and the outcome was stated to be certain, the combat was still described as "intense" and as two combatants swirling and attacking in bursts of power. George Lucas stated that Anakin's defeat of Dooku proved him to be a "perfect apprentice" to Palpatine, and Christopher Lee stated the point of the fight was to surprise the audience and show a combatant could actually defeat Dooku.
