Desann amped by the VoTJ is enough to be a serious threat to JO Luke, who is already decently above Vader. Yavin amps Desann far more, and JO Kyle, who is far weaker than prime Kyle is able to defeat him. Keep in mind, that Kyle was hindered by Yavin’s nexus, and had to fight through legions of stormtroopers earlier.

Prove he was a serious combative threat to Luke.

Luke: If you run into Desann, don’t try to take him on alone, now that he’s been to the Valley Of the Jedi he’ll be more powerful than ever.

Kyle: Don't worry; I'm not totally crazy.

Kyle was only Kyp level as a duelist. He'd get ragdolled and one-shotted in the Force.

Sources have placed Desann below even Jerec, who is canonically Vader's inferior.

Yavin Desann should be somewhere around Vader’s tier. That’s not the point though. Kyle being hindered, in addition to his massive growth until FOTJ should make up for the gap between Yavin Desann and Vader.

I mean, I wouldn't mind Katarn being > Vader in all honesty, but your scaling is severely lacking in substance and evidence.

Vader wins in a mismatch. The project lead of Outcast debunked Desann being comparable to Luke in any way. Even insinuating that Luke was more impressed than worried even when being blindsided.

Basically what Kevin says is that even with a surprise edge Desann doesn't fluster or distress Luke. With his surprise only giving him an initial edge. More or less at the end he just says Luke isn't invincible and maybe on the day a snowball lives in hell a random factor might let him kill Luke. Which is the same as saying "walking up stairs poses a legitimate threat, damage and death can come in many ways and you're vulnerable to them."

To me the "damage and death can come in many ways" refers to outside or environmental factors. Kevin had the chance here to just straight up says "Desann could beat Luke" or "It could go either way". Instead he:

1. He specifies that Luke was indeed blindsided. But wasn't worried about this.
2. Said blindside only gave Desann the initial edge. Meaning he lost it shortly thereafter. 
3. He prefaces that Desann can be a threat........ but not directly. 

Seems pretty clear cut to me

Honestly, there was never any indication Desann was comparable to Luke but that does not make him weak. He has some good accolades and hype along with feats. Katarn beating him remains impressive, especially when you consider that he had very little training.

OT Vader wins in a difficult fight

How powerful is Luke at this point as compared to ROTJ? Has he actually grown in power by any notable margin?
