Was the EU inconsistent on Sidious wanting a successor?
January 20th 2020, 7:55 am
I can vaguely remember some EU sources saying that Palpatine didn't want to be succeeded, but desired to live forever as the culmination of the Rule of Two and the Sith, and then there's some that support the G Canon notion that Sidious wanted Anakin/Luke to be his successor. Is this an inconsistency, or did Sidious change his mind a lot?

Nah, it's pretty consistent: he never wanted to be replaced. Even Lucas, who said that Sidious wanted someone stronger than himself as an apprentice, stated that this would only be for the purposes of helping him rule the universe.

No. He wanted a stronger apprentice so they could deal with shit while he rules his empire. Sidious would play mind games with the apprentice to throw off their confidence in their ability to defeat him.

Sidious wanted to retire and live in luxury. While heir (the successor) would function as a Duke, and take care of day to day governance.

Choose someone as a successor and you will inevitably be succeeded.
Choose someone hungrier and you will be devoured.
Choose someone quicker and you won't dodge the blade at your back.
Choose someone with more patience and you won't block the blade at your throat.
Choose someone more devious and you'll hold the blade that kills you.
Choose someone more clever and you'll never know your end.
Despite these cautions, an apprentice is essential. A Master without an apprentice is a Master of nothing.
Since Sidious wasn't a nihilist it is pretty consistent tbh.

Yet Marka Ragnos is still successful.
