Koon's rough equal in Savage (if even that) got slapped in a few moves around the same time by a pre-Florum Maul. And considering that Koon is likely the strongest of the team, they lose.

Maul might lose in a duel because of the numbers of the Jedi, but if he has his saberstaff he could win in a gruelling contest. But if it becomes a Force only battle, he has a better chance.
